Just as German Riesling has become known for its tremendous value, Austria has garnered similar notoriety for its high level of quality. However, reaching this point has taken decades’ worth of work on the part the region’s top producers. Franz Hirtzberger is not only one such producer, he is also the longtime chairman of the Vinea Wachau Growers’ Association, a group which brought international renown to the region by enforcing quality standards unheard of in other parts of the world.
Hirtzberger, which is located on the western edge of the Wachau Valley, farms some of the greatest vineyards in the region. These cold-climate sights mixed with complex soils produce Riesling and Gruner Veltliner of immeasurable depth and intensity. Perfection and ideal ripeness are the focus, which is why Hirtzberger is known to harvest through five or more passes in the vineyards. This process of hand-picking allows him to assure that each grape has reached the apogee of depth and flavor.
