Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2006

$145

A pale yellow Champagne with very light, abundant bubbles which rise steadily to form a fine mousse. The pure bouquet opens with a contrast between an already well-developed intensity and a finesse that reveals aromas of pears, greengages and white flowers. After a little time the intensity presents the aromatic richness and maturity of a wine that is already expressing great potential. On the palate, a lively, direct, precise attack is dominated by flavors of candied lemon zest and fresh pineapple. The mid palate is fresh and balanced. The overall impression is of generosity, voluptuousness and volume, highlighted by characteristic grapefruit and citrus notes. The zesty finish is long, lingering and complex. This Champagne's marriage of finesse and aromatic intensity is a promise of further potential, but already offers very pleasurable drinking.

Have enjoyed this several times over the past 12+ months and it keeps getting better and better with time. Perhaps @Antonio Galloni is right with his praise and I should have stocked up better.

Oh hey. This Comptes talks. It says “I am here” the way landing a proper tours jete feels good I probably messed that ballet spelling. But this wine was lovely and lively and precise.

30 April 2018 My first sip on the '06, and I'll be coming back for more... Very fine bubbles, quite elegant in the glass. Incredibly balanced between mineral, acid and Chardonnay fruit, hint of sweetness and salinity on the long finish. Photos of the hand carved, chalk cellar halls that extend three levels below ground to age an amazing amount of wine and 3000ml bottles of the Brut Reserve resting in the riddling racks. They have one employee to riddle all their bottles, he turns about 44,000 bottles per day. We got the extra special tour thanks to our trade affilliations, seeing bottles they usually don't allow the tours go any place near... Hiding deep the caves they are resting the Comte in the (2012) 3L jeroboam and (2012) 6L methuselah formats, OMG would I love to get my hands on one of those... Keep your eyes out, guessing they might hit the market in the next few years.

The 2006 Comtes de Champagne is striking, especially in the way it brings together elements of ripeness and freshness in a hypothetical blend of the 2002 and 2004. Smooth and creamy on the palate, the 2006 is all about texture. There is a real feeling of density and weight in the 2006, qualities I expect to see grow with time in the bottle. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. The 2006 has been nothing short of magnificent both times I have tasted it. Comtes de Champagne remains the single best value (in relative terms) in tête de cuvée Champagne. I suggest buying a case and following it over the next 20-30 years, which is exactly what I intend to do. There is little doubt the 2006 Comtes de Champagne is a magical Champagne in the making. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2015)

From magnum. Still somewhat shy but wait a few years, and it will show its pedigree quality.
