R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 1981
Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia acquired Vina Tondonia from a group of clergy in 1913. The Tondonia vineyard stretches over 247 acres, situated on the right bank of the river Ebro, in Rioja Alta. Soil is alluvial clay with a high proportion of limestone. There are 4 varieties of red grapes planted in this vineyard: Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacho. The Tondonia vineyard is the most famous of the winery. Over 100 hectares, it is situated in a shell-shaped depression on the right bank of the river Ebro, where the most classic Rioja wines are grown. Grapes from Vina Tondonia are always used in making their highest quality wines, with truly exceptional vintages becoming Gran Reservas.

What an absolute treat. Medium ruby in the glass with just a hint of garnet. Fruit and tannin almost completely resolved. The purity of the acidity is stunning but the most impressive part of the wine is the texture and mouthfeel. Silky and elegant. Earth and mushroom. Burgundian.

Tasted blind. Nice bright tawny color. Notes of cherry, rhubarb, stems, moist soil and pea shoots. Lots of fruit in the mouth. A bit disjointed and kind of went all over the place. I guessed red burgundy, and there were other guesses citing other continents. A true CMF wine. We all guessed the color and the planet right.
