Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva Montefico Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2011

$102

This 7.5 acre vineyard is one of the best kept secrets in Barbaresco. Montefico takes on the deep character of a classic Barbaresco. Cultivated in a warm microclimate, this wine has a massive character that is austere without being tight. The first vintage of Montefico was produced in 1967. The Montefico is Ruby red in color with an amazing bouquet which is both spicy and intense with notes of red fruits. Full-bodied with a solid structure, intense minerality and slow-maturing tannins.

Still so young, but not tight. High tones of cherry and flowers and a long, drying finish.

Tightky wound. Lavender, anise, hard cherry candy, herbs. The texture and quality of tannin are really impressive. Very long detailed finish. This is a baby but phenomenal with 3 hours of air.

I think Montefico is one of the richer Cuvées in the PdB range. Initial response - Menthol and Mint - very savoury. Dry powdery tannins; a touch of liquorice and tar on the medium plus bodied palate. Dried cherry. Some bitterness at the finish - good grip even at 13 years. I’m not across all of the PdB Riservas but if anyone is it is probably Galloni. His description, “Imagine the precision of Ovello but with slightly darker fruit and more density and power through the middle. That’s the Montefico.”

Rich Ripe sweet fruits of cherries. Sexy even. The tannins are on the finish after trying this wine. Great mouthfeel. CB 92 Rio Sordo Cru

Very, very cherry. Two hour decant and it really evolved. So aromatic. And real structure integrated into the mix. Tannic at first, with roast beef the tannins disappeared and it was a smooth earthy mix of red fruits and spices. Dee-lish.

At Valentino's, Los Angeles, with Bill Dritsas, 1/10/17. Big wine. Superb depth and fruit. Really nice with my veal chop.
