Le Pergole Torte: the prestige wine of Montevertine is only produced in outstanding vintages. This ultimate wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months and then racked into small French oak (Allier) barrels for the final six month stage of its elevage. It is produced primarily from a two hectare vineyard planted in 1968 exclusively to Sangiovese vines with a north-northeast exposure.

Certainly one of the best representations of Sangiovese there is, the 2014 vintage is perfect for my tastes with stunning elegance and transparency, almost Burgundian in style. It wafts a seductive and perfumed bouquet of cool wild berry fruit with blood orange, baking spice and roses. The palate has impeccable detail and focus, with a silky texture, smooth tannins and a long and vibrant finish. Excellent already, with a long life ahead!

Not as open knit as some of the commentary on this vintage would have you believe. Fairly tightly wound and austere at this stage, cool blue fruit tones with some barrel notes, built more like a classic brunello than the ethereal grace I was expecting. Not going to crack another for at least 5-8 years

Juicy and sweet fruits, inflected with botrytis, gentle tannins and softer acidity. Quite approachable as such a young wine.

Even in this vintage; it’s excellent. Impressive already and while it’ll never be magnificent, it’s flawless.

The blood lines on this are undeniable but I don’t believe this was ever meant to be consumed this young. No rating.

Really delicious. Cherry syrup, strawberry, tar. Would love to revisit in 5 years.
