The estate was created at Bolgheri in 1983 as a result of Eugenio Campolmi's desire to get closer to nature and establish an intimate relationship with his vines. His idea was to start off from the vineyards, investing heavily in research and experimentation (including the use of varieties rarely planted in the area) and thus demonstrating that even asmall estate can contribute towards making a wine region important. He and his wife, Cinzi Merli's, fruitful efforts paid off and now Le Macchiole is a highly acclaimed and respected vineyard.Cinzi Merli, who now runs the vineyard (since her husband's passing in 2002), descirbes the Scrio as: ' The Prodigal son, the one that alway causes worry and concern, the one who makes you work hard. With him you must always be attentive, you can never relax control, but then he can also give great satisfaction. This is the wine that most reminds me of Eugenio. 'The Scrio is 100% Syrah and presents with a deep and crisp ruby red color. It has very persistent balsamic notes and is round on the palate, as its acidity gently melts with sweet tannins. The Scrio also exhibits hints of mint and eucalyptus.
