Giuseppe Quintarelli is a legendary estate located in the hills north of Verona in the heart of the Valpolicella appellation. It is regarded by many as the greatest of all Amarone producers, and is known for its traditional deep, complex wines packaged with distinctive handwritten labels. The great man Quintarelli himself, known as il Maestro del Veneto, died in 2012 aged 84 but the winery remains family-owned and managed.

While this is Quintarelli's current vintage it does show its age with a medium Garnet color and aromas that are mainly tertiary in nature - the cherry fruit is underpinned with earth, forest floor, leather, wet stone and tobacco. I doubt it will improve with further age and I don't expect it will gain more charm. All in all a surprisingly austere effort

A very nice Valpolicella. You notice the smooth, silky notes up front. Deep currant, floral elements. So rich, you barely notice the high alcohol content. Classic Quintarelli quality. I still enjoy the Rosso Ca del Merlo for a similar price point.
