Fennel, pot pourri, dried red cherry and tea with a slight balsamic quality. A little Brett, but in a charming way. Definitely on the decline. I would love to have tasted this a decade or more ago. The 2001 is probably the best Italian wine I have ever tasted.

Just beautiful drinking, still fresh, complicated. A bottle to spend an evening with.

Amazing how smooth this Sangiovese was. These things just need time

1982 Gaja Barbaresco. First of two reds at Il Piccolino lunch w K and group pre-Mattel party. Brick-coloured, earthy, and tarry. Lots of acid and great with food. Interesting to drink this alongside the 1997 Gaja Sperss, which, though younger, was less acidic and smoother to drink without food.
