Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2016

$130

Clos des Papes is a true reference point and icon of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The Avril family has been making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the early part of the 18th century - bottling under the name Clos des Papes since 1896! The most important figure in the domaine's history is Paul Avril, who ran the estate from 1963 through 1987. Paul was a staunch traditionalist who firmly believed in the principle of 'one estate, one wine', and resisted the pressure to bottle high ticket super-cuvees, as was the fashion in the region. In keeping with this philosophy, Clos des Papes produces only one cuvee of red Chateauneuf and one of white. Sadly, Paul passed away in June of 2009 at the age of 72, leaving an enduring legacy in the region as one of its greatest icons and ambassadors.

Lurid ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes raspberry liqueur, cherry compote, exotic spices and candied lavender. Juicy, seamless and alluringly sweet, offering impressively concentrated and sharply delineated flavors of sappy red fruits, succulent herbs, spicecake and candied flowers that spread out steadily on the back half. Densely packed but also lithe in character, finishing with slow-building tannins that shape the exuberant red fruit on the extremely long, sappy and penetrating finish. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, December 2019)

Even2016, new released vintage, quite concentrated covered rough fruity taste caused due to young vintage. Balanced at really high level. @5585, tatong, 190628

Infanticide but I needed to taste as next one will be in 6-7 years. What a wonderful wine. At the beginning it was closed but after 2 hours it opened up giving dark ripe red and black fruit. Kirsch, herbs some licorice and refined tannins. Goes on very long. Yes it is ripe, yes there is heat however the acidity and mineral core of this wine will take it super long in time. Can't wait to see how this will be in 10 years but I know it will be a very good wine.
