Azienda Agricola Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2013

$115$94.30

Simply stated, Fontodi is one of the greatest properties in Tuscany today. Giovanni Manetti wasn't happy enough to rest on his laurels having already created Flaccianello, which is considered one of the top Super Tuscans in Italy. Instead, he continued to tinker with the wine in his portfolio that was his personal favorite, Vigna del Sorbo, and now it is considered Fontodi's flagship.Vigna del Sorbo is a single vineyard expression of Chianti Classico Riserva. Up until recently, it was always a blend which contained a healthy dose of Cabernet Sauvignon. This is of course up until the epic 2010, when Manetti decided to start dialing back on the Cabernet to allow his Sangiovese to express itself in its purest form. Now Vigna del Sorbo is a 100% pure varietal expression of Sangiovese, and both the critics and consumers agree that it's drop-dead gorgeous.

Tough vintage, closed at first, but then opens up with a bouquet of berries, but very high alcohol level, 15%

Winery is located in the heart of Chianti Classico in the valley which lies south of the town of Panzano and is called the "Conca d’Oro" (the golden shell) because of its amphitheatre shape. Aromas of dried fruits and oak notes from 24 months of aging. On the palate sweet cherry flavors with tobacco and floral tones. Fine dusty tannins, well balanced, long finish ending with earthy mineral character. Pricy but one of the best I’ve tasted.

Massive dark intense wine of pure Sangiovese from old vines. This is an infant and should cellar well for many years. Drink again in 2013.

Strong fruit forward nose. Rich, silky, and tannic. Red ripe cherries. Could definitely age for a few more years to tone it down a bit. Overall, quite excellent!
