The 2016 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso Ca'del Laito boasts a seductive and perfumed bouquet, with notes of brown spice and tobacco blossoming further to show raspberry coulis and a lifting hint of fresh mint. This is quite savory, with silky textures ushering in cool-toned red and black berries and inner herbal tones. Sweet tannins come forward through the long finale, balanced by a concentration of primary fruits, promising years of positive evolution in the cellar. The Ca'del Laito is matured in a combination of 50% third-pass tonneaux and 50% large, 25-hectoliter barrels for 23 months. There’s beautiful symmetry in this gorgeous Ripasso, but don’t expect it to perform like a baby Amarone. (Eric Guido, Vinous, February 2021)

2016 vintage. Black cherry, red plum, red currant, wild strawberry, hibiscus, sandalwood, tree bark, licorice, dried lavender. Very layered, with an almost sweet quality to the tannin. Good balance between fruit and earth and spice.

Dance with this wine. The best dance partner I ever had was a man who was maybe 70 or 80 I polka’d with when in St Louis I’d attend the Eastern European Folk Dance dances held weekly in a church basement by aging hippies. THAT was a time to be alive. My feet scarcely touched the floor and yet. Bright acid, bamboozling alcohol and more fun than we could shake a stick at and let’s face it, stick shaking is inevitably what quarantine boredom leads to for amusement. But sticks no more! Grab this vino. It hints at stems but tilts at raisins and the raisin action feels like age or, I dunno, shriveling. Yet still it is fresh. It’s sorta the Patrick Stewart of wine (yah still watching Picard).

Really love this one. Second bottle. A little earthy on the nose and pretty silky in the mouth with some berries and soft tannins that linger.

Improved from last year. Red fruit, tempered by oak and that signature Italian leather. Velvety texture and a nice finish. It needs a little time open for the oak to relax, but I recommend finishing it in one night as it loses power after a day open.

One of the January ‘21 selections from Verve Wine’s Grand Tour subscription. Takes me back to Italy - like a great house wine this is better than the price point. Verve says go with pork ragu but we did Berkeley’s Cheese Board veggie pizza and it’s all there, it quenches and you want more, a perfect dinner wine. Love it.
