Vieux Château Certan Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

$299

The dense ruby/purple-colored, tight 2000 gradually reveals notes of oak, tapenade, blackberries, spice box, licorice, and vanilla. Deep, medium to full-bodied, and powerful, with superb purity, low acidity, and high tannin, this backward, concentrated Vieux Chateau Certan falls just short of rivaling the sensational 1998. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. Robert Parker

Shows a certain freshness on the nose. Oddly enough is has a Burgundy type of allure to it. Light red berry fruit and orange rind. Wine improved with aeration and gained weight. Tannins are super fine make way for a touch of mocha, hickory and feral hog.

Wedding Anniversary special. Very dense ruby, shows no signs of age, no bricking. Initial notes of vanilla needed breathing. Note of pipe tobacco. Dark savoury plum flavours. Felt like it was holding something back , some latency even for a 20 year old wine. Jancis has a drinking window of 2008 to 2020 which is why I opened it. On the other hand James Molesworth for WS said 2020 to 2035! Very different to Jancis. On the evidence of this tasting I think James got it right. This has a future but this is sadly my only bottle. Would love to try in 5 and then 10 years. As a final summary expected more from this wine in the 2000 vintage despite being arguably too early.

Lovely Pomerol. Not mind blowing but just damn good. Bright red fruits that surprised me given the age. Once again, a harmonious wine that had great liveliness to it.

Licorice and tar on the nose. Briary palete with stand-out tannins. Lovely texture and mouthfeel. Needs a few more years to soften up. Otherwise, great.

In a good spot with the fruit still in play. Few more years in the bottle will create perfection.

Wild berry mix and amazing floral bouquet on the nose. I love this producer and surprised their 00 did not show better today. Maybe, it's just not a good point in it's evolution. Wild ripe juicy berries, tobacco, leather, dark dry earth & pebbles, touch of grilled meats, underbrush, high acid, slightly grippy tannins. Maybe it develops with more time. It's good but had higher expectations because of the vintage and the producer. Normally a rockstar but not showing that today.

Soft, focused with beautiful, intense red and blue fruit contrasted by hints of herbs. Ready yet still youthful.
