Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 1990

$759

The 1990 La Chapelle is the sexy and opulent. I had the 1990 at the Jaboulet tasting, and again out of a double magnum three months ago. On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a three-digit score. The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all the attention it has garnered. The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at the edge. Spectacular aromatics offer up aromas of incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, and a touch of chocolate. As it sits in the glass, additional nuances of pepper and grilled steak emerge. There is extraordinary freshness for such a mammoth wine in addition to abundant tannin, an amazing 60-second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshy texture that have to be tasted to be believed. Despite its youthfulness, the 1990 La Chapelle is lovely to drink, although it will be even better with another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should age for 35-40+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050 Robert Parker

Day 2 of WineBoyz Wineapalooza. I brought this to pair along side it's big brother, the 61 La Chapelle. Deep, dark and almost opaque. Notes of dark black fruit, mocha, cranberry. Nice floral notes too. Rich and silky in the mouth, and grew with airtime. Side by side, this definitely has similarities to the 61 next to it. Needs 10+ more years to gain more complexity. The next day this was still singing. 95+

Tasted blind alongside another bagged bottle. This is also dark ruby, more more opaque than the 90 Chave next to it. Very refined nose with dark fruit, some wood and a green olive thing that differentiates it from the Chave (and from other 90 La Chapelle's I've had in the past). I guessed this as the 90 Chave before both 90 Hermitage bottles were revealed to us. There is definitely some bottle variation with these 90 La Chapelle's as I've had better samples, including a better one not that long ago. The green olive thing was interesting and not necessarily desirable, at least for me.

Soft plush plummy fruit. Tobacco and some gnarly savory notes. Intense and great balance. Really sexy and lush. An extremely good bottle.

Dark reddish tawny. Mostly opaque. Great reddish regal color when the light hits the glass. Notes of black cherries, blueberries, cranberries, slate stone, moist earth and a little menthol. Velvet glove in the mouth. Amazingly rich with tannins totally integrated. Silky. Flying high from the moment it was opened. 6 hours in this is getting bigger and more complex. Definitely the best performance I’ve had with this wine.

Great funktastic black olive tapenade, peppercorn and deep dark chewy expressive fruit. Smokey and sumptuous contribution from @Andrew Steffensmeier...and with that I’m all caught up on Iowa.

Another 4th Friday for the books! Insane pulls this month to follow up the most epic month (April) that we’ve ever had! Total treat. Plum and lead but not overbearing at all. Some cherry, earthy funk, clay. Still has 5-7yrs of life ahead of it. Incredibly smooth.

Dark tawny. Opaque. Huge nose. Notes of black cherry, menthol, ripe blueberries, graphite, moist soil, plums and a little anise. Rich and silky in the mouth. Still youthful. Perfectly balanced. Long finish. I know this wine is controversial to some but it's always performed for me.

Maybe the best red wine I've had this year so far. Had everything and 20 years left in it.

Nice ruby color, translucent with tawny, slightly amber rims. Very aromatic nose from the get go. Notes include black cherry, ripe rhubarb, menthol, slate, and smoked meat. Rich in the mouth. Great balance of fruit with a delicate structure. Warm, palate-coating finish. Adds more complexity in both the nose and mouth with air time. Drinking well right now, but can still improve with more age I think. An amazing bottle of wine.
