Marchesi Antinori Solaia Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2001

$259

Deep, dark sensations of smoke, tar and scorched earth emerge from the powerful 2001 Solaia. This fresh, vibrant offering is packed with dense ripe fruit. This is an especially rich, heavy style of Solaia that lacks the subtlety and grace of the finest vintages. Still, in 2001 Solaia is a more complete wine than Tignanello. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Blackberry and drying plum. Some sage. Noticeable heat. Tannins are very firm and lack integration. A little out of phase but still a pleasure.

Dark ruby in the glass, very cab-centric at first with more toasty oak showing than expected, rich and bold but seductive, silky and focused. Sweet dark chocolate and blue fruits, some menthol, herbs. Continued to evolve.

Left bank Bordeaux-style blend. Dark ruby red with a brick rim. Intense aromas of ripe black fruit, coffee, graphite, leather and a hint of menthol. The palate is explosive noting black berry/currant, tar, coffee, tobacco, black licorice, dried herbs and soy sauce. Nice touch of oak on the long and velvety finish. Ultra concentrated, full bodied and a bit on the rustic side. Beautifully balanced (the fruit and tertiary notes are in beautiful harmony) and well structured. Outstanding and aging beautifully! Cannot thank you enough for sharing this outstanding wine, Petey P!

Profoundly assertive four-square balance. Age has mellowed the beast and it is quite compelling. I concede.

An amazing wine with incredible complexity. Black currants, black plums, dark chocolate, earth, sawdust, cigar smoke, etc. It just keeps going on and on! Better than the 2001 Ornellaia I had earlier. It can be enjoyed for many years to come.
