Luciano Sandrone Cannubi Boschis Barolo Nebbiolo 1990

$545

The 1990 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is a massive, dark Barolo loaded with dark cherries, tobacco, grilled herbs, menthol and sweet French oak. Stylistically it could not be more different than the 1989 in its texture, weight and flavor profile. Still deeply colored, the 1990 Cannubi Boschis offers incredible textural richness and depth, with a finish that lasts forever. With time in the glass, the wine’s inner perfume emerges, adding further dimensions of complexity and nuance. The 1990 Cannubi Boschis remains a benchmark wine for Sandrone (and Piedmont as a whole)... Robert Parker

Dark fruit turning tertiary. Power but elegant too. Dried roses, tar, faded red fruit. Gorgeous but probably past its best.

1990: First impression was Cabernet like, some olive and an abundance of fruit. Definitely in that tween phase. Had the 1985 recently, which proved the lie that modern wasn't also classic. However, this bottle of 1990 is still pretty primary, and brimming with fruit. So much so that the experience is confusing, recalling what the wine was on release (rich, hedonistic, delicious), and now, not mature - yet still awkward. Plenty of bright fruit to evolve into future maturity.

Does age cure the wood pathology? Or was Sandrone so much better in 1990?

The wine professionals preferred the 89. I liked this one with the food at L'Arpege.

Tasted this next to Giacosa Villero '90. Epic battle and as much as I love giacosa, sandrone came out ahead by a hair.
