Fonseca Vintage Port Blend 2007
...the Fonseca '07 has a very broody, introverted bouquet at the moment, demanding several minutes to open up (dutifully afforded I might add.) Curiously, there is something that reminds me of the sea...something estuarine, iodine or seaweed. The palate is full-bodied with lush, ripe saturated tannins, good acidity and purity, like the nose very primal and biding its time. Dark berries, dates, fresh fig just in the background and fine crispness on the finish, marked with just a dash of cracked pepper. Pitch black with a purple rim, completely shut down nose. After a few hours of aeration this was still a bit nervous. Bright acids, dark purple fruit and a touch of vanilla and black pepper. I like my VP on the younger side of the drinking window when the fruit is still powerful but already rounded out. My next bottle will be in 4-6 years. Opened too young in the muted/shut down phase. 93++
