Domaine de la Janasse Vieilles Vignes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005

$139

Absolutely profound, and certainly one of the vintage's great wines is the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Inky plum/ruby/purple to the rim, with a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, smoked meats, blackberries, cassis, and earth, the wine is deep, powerful, full-bodied, with fabulous concentration, purity, and a multi-dimensional mouthfeel. The finish goes on for close to a minute. Forget this wine for 2-5 years and drink it over the following 25+ years. Robert Parker

Powerful nose of undergrowth and bright red berry, elegant and so round, fine tannins still framing a beautiful beam of red and black fruit, asian spice, white pepper. Phenomenal and still drinking young.

Janasse rocks! love this wine. it could hold its own with Alban or Saxum or the best Australians. not French in style at all. this is a massive fruit bomb even at age 10. I would love to taste this in another 10 years. today it is a little one dimensional. but I think as the fruit calms down it will add complexity.

I wouldn't guess CdP from the nose but the palate screams it with delicious spice and garrique. So young but no need to cellar this as the fruit is in harmony with everything else. Only detractor is the alcohol at 15.5%

The high alcohol pokes through on the nose but not as noticeable on the palate. Good CdP spice, lots of earth with dark fruit, and nice, long aftertaste. This works with the right food. Tonight it is brisket.
