Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2009 (1500ml)

$559

The blend for the 2009 Pichon Lalande is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, somewhat unusual at this estate which usually has more Merlot in the blend. As stated previously, the Cabernet Sauvignon reached levels of ripeness and intensity of flavor in 2009 never seen before in Bordeaux! The final blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot and a pH of 3.8 combines the best of a vintage such as 1996, in terms of structure, freshness, and precision, with the best of 1982, in terms of opulence, power, unctuosity, and thickness. The opaque purple-colored 2009 exhibits an intoxicatingly intense nose of red and black fruits, subtle smoke, charcoal, forest floor, and a hint of flowers. Unusually full-bodied for a wine from this estate as well as unctuously textured, voluptuous, and incredibly pure and precise, this dazzling wine should be drinkable at an early age, and evolve for 30+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040. Robert Parker

A nice poised nose. A little under for a 2009. Quite cold blooded and a bit lacking in the mid palate. Compared to the 2009 Baron this is miles away. Disappointing

The 2009 Chateau Pichon Lalande is a thrilling wine to savor at now eleven years of age. Needing a one hour decant to be fully expressive, this glorious Bordeaux opens with a deep core of tar, chocolate covered espresso bean and blackberry compote aromas that take shape in the glass. The dense, chewy mouthfeel is lined with moderate tannins that provide the backbone alongside the bright acidity. Layers of dark fruits are woven together with creosote and shades of Turkish coffee and cassis on this expressive palate — all leading to the exceptional long and inviting finish. Truly sensational now, this beautiful, warm vintage Bordeaux will cellar well for at least another fifteen years. Be sure to give this a long decant if enjoying in its youth. Drink 2020-2040- 95

Contained and plush. Allon place but not showing a huge amount right now... but the balance is great.

Very red fruited. Raspberry reduction with boysenberries. Ripe and polished, this wine is showing great for its youth. Coffee and chocolate are complemented by forest floor and red clay. Lengthy and just super clean and great.

Second growth that rarely disappoints. Complex, inviting nose with ripe cassis, toffee, caramel, fig compote and cedar. Beautifully balanced, savory mouthfeel but needs at least 5 more years to come on its own.

Opulent, already drinking so well but long decant, this will be hard to keep your hands off.
