Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

$159

An explosively rich, exotic, fruity Montrose, the 1995 displays even more fat and extract than the 1996. There is less Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1995 blend, resulting in a fuller-bodied, more accessible and friendlier style. The wine exhibits an opaque black/ruby/purple color, as well as a ripe nose of black fruits, vanillin, and licorice. Powerful yet surprisingly accessible (the tannin is velvety and the acidity low), this terrific example of Montrose should be drinkable at a young age. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2028. Robert Parker

I had high hopes for many Left Bank 1995’s but I think 1996 is actually shaping up to be a stronger vintage for Medoc.

A tad tired, but still alive. Would have enjoyed more five years ago.

As said elsewhere here we love Chateau Montrose. This 95 is less good than the 96 and its been consistent in the last decade or so. Has a dollop more acidity and a dollop less fruit. Drinking really well now but I wonder if its going to stick for much longer. Might just be a slightly off bottle. We will drink up.
