Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

$699

A wine of unreal depth, it is armed with a powerful personality that glides across the mouth like liquid silk. A seductively sensual wine, it drowns the palate in waves of seamless dark fruits. One of the greatest Saint-Estephes I've ever tasted, this wine will give the 1990 Montrose a run for its money when both are at full maturity! Robert Parker

In a weird coincidence both my brother and I brought this to a blind-tasting. Mine = corked

Beautifully evolved nose of leather, mulberry, brambly red berries, clove and dried mint. Medium-bodied with a regal countenance—there is still tons of structure, with mouth-coating fine grain tannin in abundance. Truly, this wine could go on and on and on in the cellar. The 1989 Château Montrose is not terribly fruit-driven, rather it's interior space is occupied by notes of dusty, clayey soil, cedar, black tea and spice. That wonderful impression of clove is on the finish, too.

Fully mature and totally in the pocket. Slight bricking in the glass and cloves jump out and grab you. Deep red fruit, dusty tannins, pencil shavings. The fruit takes a backseat to the tertiary characteristics but it's a fun study. From April in FLA.

This one needs a ridiculous amount of time, it is almost primary for a 1989. See you in 25 years

Leather and lots of it. Cedar, subtle dark fruit and bramble fruit, hint of mint at the end. The grandmothers purse in the attic. Beautiful acid at the end keeps it refreshing and easy to drink. Perfect pair to the 60-day dry aged ribeye!
