Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

9.382 ratings on Delectable
$215

This estate has frequently hit the bull's eye over recent vintages, and the 2000 Montrose is the finest effort produced since the compelling 1990 and 1989. This gigantically sized, tannic, backward effort boasts a saturated inky purple color followed by a huge nose of acacia flavors, crushed blackberries, creme de cassis, vanilla, hickory smoke, and minerals. Extremely full-bodied, powerful, dense, and multi-layered, this unreal Montrose should last for 30+ years. A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, this is a special wine that has exceptional purity and length... Robert Parker

#steakandclaret night for belated Father's Day. This wine was made perfectly, with massive richness and texture married perfectly to great lift. Currant like, mineral Cabernet at its best- but St. Estephe? I struggled to find it. Regardless, a great bottle that went ideally with grilled ribeye.

Nose of dark cassis, dry florals and coffee grounds. Ripe fruits that finish dry. Blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, strawberries paint the background, black tea, coffee grounds, fresh leather, dry stems, moist black earth, dry stone, some black licorice, black cherry cola, bright acidity, nice polish on the finish. This Montrose is well made. The structure, balance, length, tension, depth are in real harmony. Just needs 15 more years to be magical.

The Montrose group were the most disappointing of this tasting, but it is known that they did not put their best foot forward in 2005, and even somewhat in 2000 as both showed some balance issues that showed more heat and medicinal than power and harmony as one would expect from this storied chateau.

2000 vintage is tasting great. Plenty of blue and black fruits. Should last another 15 years.

Such maternal generosity and warmth. Enveloping like a blanket next to the fireplace on a cold night...

Given that some of the Montrose from the 1960’s is only just now starting to drink, this exotic 2000 drank very nicely this evening. It is composed of approximately 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petite Verdot. The wine was very dark, full of spice and kirsch like fruit on the nose. In the mouth it had lots of richness, more dark fruit and a powerful tannic punch. It will no doubt be even better in another five or ten years.
