Château Lynch-Bages Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1982

$545

This is another Lynch Bages that has never gone through an awkward, disjointed stage where it completely shut down. The color remains a dense ruby with some lightening at the edge. Thick, juicy, succulent notes of creme de cassis intermixed with dried herbs, vanillin, minerals, and anise leap from the glass. Fleshy and full-bodied, with the vintage's voluptuous texture and low acid, fruit/glycerin-dominated flavors well-displayed in its full-bodied personality, this wine tastes young, but is also ready to drink. Anticipated maturity: now-2015. Robert Parker

I tasted the 1982 Lynch-Bages twice within a month, both at a private dinner in London and at the château, from bottle and double-magnum on separate occasions. Both vindicate an exceptionally fine 1982, perhaps a bit overlooked in a vintage full of stars. Curiously, the bottle in Bordeaux does not fully deliver the mesmerizing freshness and energy compared to the bottle in London: pencil-lead-tinged black fruit intermixed with clove and freshly-rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, perhaps just a little austere compared to its peers. Yet, indeed, the bottle in London exudes class and composure with a detailed, mineral-driven vintage belying that year's unseasonably warm period. Superb. Tasted both in London at a private dinner and at the château. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2023)

Drinking way out of my $ range . 1982 Don’t know how to describe this. Left full by a guest attending Napa Premiere. Thank you who ever that was.

Yum. Deep ruby red color with no bricking. Better a few years back but still very good. Could be from nowhere other than pauillac. No getting better and not getting worse. No likes really????

Deep dark tawny color. Opaque. Fragrant nose right off the bat which says "this will be better than any of the other half dozen 82 LBs you've had". Notes of forest redwood, cigar leaf, moist earth, menthol and dark dusty berries. So rich and smooth in the mouth. Great balance of fruit and structure. Yes, best 82 LB I've had. Drink if you want today, but I don't think well stored bottles like this are going to be in decline anytime soon.

Decanted and drank over 2 hours. So much evolution in the glass. Ripe, weighty mid palate. Couldn't really be any better.

Still showing strong, think it shows why this producer has such prestige, as I've had many an '82 that has let me down...
