Château Léoville-Las Cases Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2006

$249

Tasted at the chateau. If somebody opined that this is the best wine of 2006, then I might not disagree. Jean-Hubert Delon has done wonders with a difficult vintage and produced a sublime wine that has the potential to surpass the 2005...it is that good. A deep purple, opaque core. The nose is stunning: sensuous cedary black fruits, crushed violets, and a hint of peppermint. Utterly seductive. The palate does not disappoint: beautifully balanced with perfect acidity, elegant sumptuous and vivacious. Certainly one of the best Las-Cases I have tasted at this stage, a Saint Julien to aspire to this year... Neal Martin (eRobertParker.com)

A very well crafted Bordeaux...one of the better ones I've had even at only 11yrs old. This needs another 7+ until I think it starts firing on all cylinders. Oak wasn't too overpowering, lots of blackberries and peppercorn, with a solid tannin structure. Will go the distance.

A bit wound up on nose, still smoky with fresh blackcurrant and elderberry, pine bough, tangy orange and tobacco leaf. Very woodsy, but also quite shy...palate is hugely mineral and mouthcoating, touch of spice, monumental and fresh, long length. No doubt quite excellent, but not showing its arsenal today...wait 5 years at least if you have such patience!

I guess I’m drinking this too soon! Need to better manage the cellar… tremendous fruit on the nose as I decanted that became more vegetal with time. Bright and leathery on the tongue, rich and luscious in the mouth. Strong tannins — easy to see how others are enjoying it at twice the age.

You can drink it now or in the next 3 decades, but you always recognise the true quality of it.
