Intense aromas of currant, blackberry and light vanilla. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Layered, with everything in the right proportion for the vintage. Excellent. Reminds me of the 1996. Best after 2012... Wine Spectator

The 2004 Léoville Las Cases has a noticeable mintiness on the nose that actually complements the red fruit, though it deviates away from what you might call Saint-Julien typicité. After ten minutes, it coheres with ash and black tea aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded texture on the entry. The 2004 shows fine acidity and is lightly spiced with cracked black pepper towards the finish. A little conservative, but it acquits itself well considering the vintage. The 2004 Léoville–Las Cases has the tough job of following the 2005. It offers black fruit mixed with sous-bois, smoke and sage aromas, now moving into its secondary stage but without the intensity of great vintages like 2005 or 2010. The palate is well balanced, with off-dry tannin. Classic in style, fresh and poised, leading to a lovely, quite sensual finish that leaves you wishing for another sip. Very fine. (Neal Martin, Vinous, December 2019)

The 04 has seen nice bottle evolution. The tannins are round & smooth. Ripe, round, elegant; blackberries, dark cherries, creamed black raspberries, faint strawberries on the side palate. Fresh red roses, raspberry cola, warmed dark earth, wet stones, soft baking spices, soft leather, touch of bay leaf, acidity is just about right, good structure, nice tension & balance and good length. The finish is full minute and is lush, round, ripe mixed berries.

It's soft, elegant and beautiful. Long presence on the palate. Core of sweet light & mid fruits, licorice, cola, fresh red flowers, rich black soil, dry pebbles, soft leather, tea, beautiful soft minerality, decent acidity and an elegant ripe fruit finish. Drink now and over the next 5-8 years.

Had to put it next to Napa to bring out the Bordeaux but it's there.
