Château Latour Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

$2195

As I indicated in the review of the 1982 Bordeaux, this is an unusual Latour in the fact that it has always been precocious. It has been jammy, forward, and delicious no matter when the cork was pulled, in total contrast to its two first-growth siblings, Mouton Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild. The dense, opaque garnet-colored 1982 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. Sweet, smoky, roasted aromas in the nose combine with jammy levels of black currant, cherry, and prune-like fruit. It possesses extraordinary concentration and unctuosity, with a thick, fat texture oozing notes of cedar wood, tobacco, coffee, and over-ripe fruit. Low acidity as well as high alcohol (for Bordeaux) give the wine even more glycerin and textural chewiness. The finish lasts forever. The only Latour that remotely resembles the 1982 is the 1961 ($5,000+ bottle), which has a similar texture and succulence. Anticipated maturity: now-2040... Robert Parker

Scarlet, with a deep dark center and clear rims. Great nose with notes of black fruit, gravel, spice, pencil lead, earth and old cedar desk wood. Mellow and silky in the mouth. High quality juice with decades of enjoyment still in front of it.

The 1982 Latour is the most consistent of the First Growths in this auspicious vintage. Tasted from both bottle and magnum in the UK in recent months, this note comes from an ex-château magnum tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux. It exudes class and majesty on the nose with its copious but brilliantly focused black fruit laced with cedar and graphite. To use a phrase I have written before, it is blue-blooded...regal. That comes through on a palate that has a haunting symmetry and a killer finish that is brilliantly defined and audaciously long, graphite lingering on the aftertaste. Quite simply, claret does not come better than this. Tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

This vintage never disappoints. We had the 82 next to the 98. The 82 was perfect. Everything about this wine make you scratch your head and say a few key words: Perfectly Balanced. Everything is in harmony. Wow., that was freaking good! I love 5 hour lunches!!! @Shawn R @David L . I was definitely thinking g to myself......Jeff @Jeffrey Lew may have flown up just for this!!!
