Château La Conseillante Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

$345

With the son of the Nicolas family, Valmy, taking over and ratcheting up the selection process as well as the quality, La Conseillante appears poised to challenge its closest neighbor, l'Evangile, as the finest estate on the border of the sector of Pomerol facing Cheval Blanc in St.-Emilion. The 2005 will challenge the extraordinary 2000. Among the truly fabulous wines made here (i.e., 2000, 1990, 1989, 1985, and 1982), its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by an exquisite bouquet of incense, raspberry jam, kirsch, licorice, and hints of black olives as well as flowers. This broadly perfumed Pomerol exhibits sensational purity, sweet tannin, medium to full body, and outstanding elegance and finesse. The fruit is forward and precocious, but there is enough stuffing, structure, and density for the wine to evolve for 20-25 years. Robert Parker

The 2005 La Conseillante is a rich, heady Pomerol. Crème de cassis, lavender, chocolate, leather, espresso, licorice and sweet French oak infuse the 2005 with tremendous character. The 2005 is, naturally, a wine of its era. There is quite a bit of extraction and tannin, and yet the wine has aged impeccably. Time in the glass brings out energy and aromatic lift to round things out nicely. The 2005 just got better and better with time, so I suggest giving it a good bit of air. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2021)

So easy to drink now, some mature secondary notes of flavor and aroma. You can go two ways with this wine, sit back and turn off the brain and enjoy it. Or dive in and analyze each layer or flavor and texture as it unfolds over the palate. Either way everyone wins! #conseillante #pomerol

WOTN. Powerful nose of graphite, tar, cherries, and earth. Super deep wine with an excellent texture. Medium plus finish. Phenomenal wine, but pricey.
