Château Haut-Brion Graves Red Bordeaux Blend 2004

$499

The dark plum/ruby-hued 2004 Haut-Brion exhibits a noble, discrete, smoky bouquet revealing notions of plum liqueur, black currants, sweet cherries, and subtle earth. In addition to its aromatic complexity, this medium-bodied effort reveals classic elegance and delicacy as well as sweet fruit in the mouth and a long finish... Robert Parker

Double decanted two nights before service. The 2004 Haut Brion pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. One the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart and ripe dark fruit: Black currants, blackberries, tobacco, pencil lead, purple flowers, gravelly earth and fine baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid; the structure is very well integrated. Confirming the notes from the nose with the addition of Flintstones vitamins. The finish is long and ferrous. This continued to build in the glass and had such a fabulous nose! Drinking well now (after a lot of air) but this has a long life yet ahead, 2054 with ease.

Tried via Coravin - took about an hour to open up and even then the tannins on back pallet overtook the limited fruit coming through...great example of why the Coravin is worth every penny - will allow the remaining 3/4's of the bottle to lie for another 3-5 years and try again instead of ruining the whole bottle tonight.

HB's personality is there but it's not enough for me.

Smooth taste but too much Oak flavor and aroma! It needs time to relax .

Ah, Haut Brion, you never disappoint! Consistently my favourite first growth. Perfect balance of fruit concentration with a smooth texture and a taste that lasts for ever...
