Château Gruaud Larose Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

$695

An extraordinarily powerful, backward wine with unlimited up-side potential, the opaque plum/purple/black-colored 1982 Gruaud-Larose exhibits an explosive nose of new saddle leather, plums, prunes, black cherry jam, chocolate, steak tartare, and roasted espresso. Unbelievably powerful, thick, and intense, with full body, mouth-searing tannin levels, a grilled steak-like flavor, and a huge, intense finish, this is a monster, blockbuster 1982 that still needs 5-7 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. It should prove to be one of the most profound Gruaud-Laroses made in the twentieth century. In quality, it is a first-growth. Robert Parker

82 at its finest. Perhaps the best vintage of Larose.

From a good looking bottle with a great fill. Decanted for 3.5 hours. Deep tawny color, suggests a little age. Great old Bordeaux nose. Notes of black cherry, sliced plums, old cedar desk, Cuban cigar, some mocha and some leather saddle. Really nice in the mouth. Has a nice sweetness to it. Lasting finish. Still at peak and bottles like this are staying there for a while.

Scarlet tawny and opaque. Great, complex nose offering notes of black cherries, herbal tobacco leaf and freshly cut Cuban cigar, cedar wood and a hint of menthol. Nicely balanced in the mouth. Gave it 5 hours of air in a decanter and patience was rewarded with a great aged Bordeaux experience. Great stuff. Paired with a 92 Dominus it was interesting to find how much these wines resemble each other.

A little cloudy and muted with a dry and brittle cork I don’t think it was stored perfectly .

This bottle of 1982 Gruaud-Larose came direct from the château cellars. It is just pure joy on the nose with fabulous scents of black fruit, hung game (less so than previous bottles), clove and a faint aroma of a stately home. It manages to offer both ample fruit and life-affirming complexity. The palate has aged little since I last tasted it; there's more red fruit here, with freshly rolled tobacco, cedar and a touch more spiciness on the finish than previous tastings, with a sweet yet structured finish. This may well represent the finest bottle that I have encountered. (Neal Martin, Vinous, January 2023)

Really in a good place. Lots of complexity, fine grained tannins, earth & saddle leather. Best vintage of GL that I've had.

Drinking exactly like it should. This wine absolutely transported me. Vibrant deep red in color with lovely notes of cedar coffee dried fruits and peanut membrane. Excellent throughout silky texture and long finish. This line should continue to drink well for at least another two decades

Always loved this '82, this isn't the best bottle though, has a slight caramelness to it, still a solid wine but didn't live up to expectations.
