Château Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2009
The 2009 Cos d'Estournel is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted...in the world! An extraordinary effort I tasted on two separate occasions...It will be a legendary claret that should last for 50-60 years. A black/purple color is accompanied by aromas of graphite, ink, creme de cassis, blackberries, cedar, and incense. Full-bodied and unctuously textured, with an ethereal personality, tons of nuances, and a burgeoning complexity, it is an enormously well-endowed, fresh, perfectly balanced tour de force in winemaking. As mentioned above, it should drink well for 50-60 years. This wine possesses this vintage's classic characteristics of enormous power, massive fruit, and extraordinary freshness and precision - largely unprecedented, particularly for Cabernet-based wines in the Medoc. Decanted and simmered for hours. By Hour 3+ this broadened into a deep and luxurious wine. Ripe fruit - currant blackberry. Nice mouthfeel with some mineral residue. Not a long tail on this but it did linger still. Not particularly fragrant. A bit inward overall but all the pieces good and bad kinda fit together and it was nonetheless quite enjoyable.

Opened smoothly and the cork was soaked deep red. Immediate hit of perfume and an inviting aroma at the bottle and on first pour. The wine is rich and velvety. Nice balance between inviting but limited mature fruit and a finish with earthy elements and the alcohol was at the right level. Lots of depth to this. It has a weighty mouthfeel. It’s a lingering joy.

Cos d’Estournel tasting. Very interesting trying these at the same time. The 2000 and the 1990 were what I was expecting and great but the 2005-2009 were clearly more refined. WOTN for me.
