Château Cheval Blanc St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1989

$725

...The big, very precocious, forward bouquet displays aromas of herbs, tobacco, sweet blackcurrants, and the telltale smoky, exotic character that often sets Cheval Blanc apart. The wine tastes like candy, given its sweet palate impression. There is excellent depth... Robert Parker

The 1989 Cheval Blanc is a vintage that I have not encountered since 2010. One bottle opened was rustic and fatigued, and Pierre-Olivier Clouet opened a second that was much better. It has a gorgeous bouquet of ample red fruit, morels, black truffle, cigar box and hints of brown sugar, all very well defined and charming. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and approaching full maturity; brown spices, bay leaf and clove infuse the red berry fruit. At 30 years of age, I suspect this 1989 will not improve further, but its robustness suggests that any decline will be graceful. Tasted from an ex-cellar bottle at the château. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2019)

1989 Bordeaux PNV Retrospective at Larkmead. Spearmint, weedy. Very mature (past?). Fruit gone- all about bottle bouquet.

One of the greatest wines I’ve had the privilege of tasting. Cab franc is a favorite of mine and to enjoy a top shelf to CF in the world is a treat...not much green pepper, more beef jerky and soy sauce than vegetal notes. Powerful even after hours of being open. Worthy of smelling for days (violet, dusted blackberries). What a pull from @Mark Flesher ! I just had to feel like a part of the WNH tonight after I saw their wines last night! @Martin G Rivard @Bill Bender @Shawn R @David L

'89 vintage. Meaty, bacon like nose, touches of toffee and blackberry jam. It's quite an obvious nose, lacking complexity in regard to the terroir of Cheval. 89 is one of my favorite vintages and I was expecting a bit more power, muscle, mouth coating and intensity. Mouthfeel is quite simple, linear and not of Cheval's level. A very charming wine indeed that misses the wow factor you expect for such origin. #bordeaux #bordeauxwines #chevalblanc
