Château Batailley Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

$175

...Their 2005, one of the finest efforts this estate has yet produced, is backward, tannic, and almost primordial in style. Built for the long-term, it offers plenty of sweet creme de cassis fruit intermixed with smoke, cedar, and earth notes. Full-bodied and powerful, it is an old style Pauillac with well-integrated acidity as well as sweet but elevated tannins... Robert Parker

Earth driven - wet soil and cut dried potpourri flowers - integrated spice box and tobacco. Just lovely.

Starting into a very nice drinking window - smooth tannins and stoic iron, pencil shavings and hoisin sauce. A coravin experiment for us

Very much closed at first, but opened a treat, with cedar, spice rack, cigar box & dry cassis on the nose. Precise palate, with dusty tannins & savoury acids, combining in a texturally scrumptious finish with an aroma that reminded me of the mulberries picked this morning. That said, loved that it wasn't super fruity. '05 being warm, was worried but this would be a cooked jam #redwine, but rather, it was succulent without having the clumsy, cloying sweetness found in some wines.

Superb! Beautifully perfumed nose. My sort of pauillac. Perfect accompaniment to slow cooked lamb. 7.6

Classic Bordeaux - has many years left. Great with the lamb... Can't wait to open the next bottle

Solid stuff, great texture but more potential still than current delivery.

Superb. Tuesday night. £25. Duck. Classic stuff, powerful yet light. Long finish. More to come on nose but feels gorgeous. Could drink this every night.
