Cayuse Vineyards God Only Knows Armada Vineyard Grenache 2013

$115

...offers a gorgeous, rich, almost masculine style...dark fruits, crushed herbs, mineral and leather scented profile. Even showing a touch of game with time in the glass, this beauty has fine tannin, plenty of fruit and a great finish, all suggesting it will drink nicely for another decade. From a great tasting at Cayuse Vineyards with Christophe Baron/Trevor Dorland.

Young and full of life with the typical Cayuse funk, but also a little thinner than I expected. Still delicious, still a favorite.

2013 Cayuse "God Only Knows" Grenache. James Brown would have loved this wine because it has more funk than his 1967 hit, "Cold Sweat." I wish I could add it as background music to this post. A huge masculine profile wine, this Grenache really stands alone. Difficult to think of a comparison. Maybe Châteauneuf du Pape on steroids? Framboise, sage, lavender and some black olives intertwined on the nose just below that funk. On the palate, Unami and shiitake mushrooms olive tapenade and roasted game with some pomegranate and boysenberry jam mixed in. When I read that, it doesn't sound very enticing, but believe me, its spectacular. Flirts with perfection structurally. Tremendously rich. Beautifully long finish. Maybe not up to the 12, just different. Love all things Christophe Baron.
