Aubert Sugar Shack Chardonnay 2014

$139

Another stunner is the 2014 Chardonnay Sugar Shack... The wine offers up great fruit, which includes notes of pineapple, green apple, honeysuckle and peach marmalade. It is full-bodied with exceptional purity, lingering across the palate. Drink it over the next 7-12 years. This is the only vineyard for Chardonnay that he has in Napa Valley. Robert Parker

Medium golden yellow in appearance. A bit sweet on the nose with butter, brioche, baked apples and lemon curd. Rich acidity (6/10) and full bodied. Complex with layers of lemon curd, apples, rich peaches, white flowers and a touch of gravel. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2027.

My first Sugar Shack. Very mineral driven at first, but that has died off. One of my favorite noses of burnt popcorn kernel and lemon zest. Quite lemon dominant on the palate...more than any other Aubert chard I’ve had. Small bit of cream on the finish. Very balanced.

Rich and concentrated and much less confection than the '13. This seems organic and less manipulated. Honeysuckle times 10, ripe green apple, apricot chutney. Viscous and oily. Let it warm a bit and indulge.

Excellent...but not my favorite of Mark’s chards. Might just need a bit more time, but I thought the alcohol and sweetness of the new oak overpowered this one a bit. But, this is splitting hairs: still an awesome wine!

Had a guest today at FF. Showed him the list of chards, to which he said "That one should be drinking well." And, voila. Here we are. This Sugar Shack Chardonnay arguably outdrank its 2014 Ritchie Chard by just about a point. A little less sweetness, a little less salinity, a little more balance than the Ritchie. Ripe peach, pear, plantain with a little bit of dried herb. It has been about 15 months since I've had this one. Lots of yellow fruits and that Classic Aubert backbone. You sorta forget about other Chards when a duo of 2014 Aubert are on the table, and this was no exception tonight.
