Aubert Powder House Chardonnay 2017

$179

The first vintage of this wine, the 2017 Chardonnay Powder House (a barrel sample) comes from eight acres of what are now estate vines planted in 2013, to Hyde Old Wente and Mt. Eden clones on Goldridge soils... The aromas charge out of the gate exhibiting energetic ripe peach, grapefruit, green tea and sea spray notes with touches of candied orange peel, ginger ale and lemon butter. Full-bodied, very refreshing and beautifully creamy in the mouth, it has layer upon layer of citrus and spice flavors, finishing with amazing persistence. Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Stood up for a few days. Sediment was apparent. Slightly tight at first. Needs just a 20 minutes to open up the glass. His 17s are showing quite well in their youth.

My wife’s birthday is this week, and Aubert is her favorite. I’d like to let the ‘17s rest a bit more, but when that’s all that is available at the house... As I’ve noted previously, I think Aubert’s 2017 Chardonnays are, for the most part, more accessible than normal, and this did nothing to dissuade me from that line of thinking. If putting this in the lineup in regards to favorites and comparisons, I think this slots in towards the back-middle of the lineup, ahead of LH&S and Hudson, but just behind Eastside. It seems to be a marriage of Hudson (ripe, juicy, yellow fruits and herbs), & Eastside (more sea salt, streak of herb crusted stone fruits, lemon cream). What stood out to me on this was how tart it was...there was more lemon tang here than any of the other Aubert chards in the portfolio, with added oyster shell. While I think this will obviously get “different”, I’m not sold it gets better with age. It’s very giving now.

Brought by a friend. PnP. Nice light straw color. Enticing nose. Notes of lemon, pineapple, gravel stone, some green apple and some dry dusty earth. Nicely balanced in the mouth, the high alcohol is not as apparent as I expected. Should age well with its impressive acidity. Pretty damn good CA Chardonnay.

Just a stunning example of chard. Our only bottle of this designation. Brioche, brown sugar and capsicum on the nose. Palate surprises with a touch of effervescence, which subsided. Very tropical notes, with a touch of spice box. Finishes with marzipan and moderate sweetness - Inn at Pound Ridge (Jean Georges). Date night.

I agree with Galloni. These young vines offer little distinction, despite the wonderful Aubert treatment.

Not too shabby, I’m liking this better than the 15 Lauren & UV-SL
