Layers and layers that go on and on. Birth year gift from my father 14 years ago that we finally got around to now. Worth the wait.

Wednesday Wine Committee. Great hosting by Gavin. 1 sparkler, 4 whites, 4 reds and 2 dessert wines. All served blind as usual. Roasted chestnuts, cinnamon, old raspberry fig and a surprising amount of heat on the nose and palate. Shocked the alcohol is that prevalent at this age! Mellowed a bit slightly in the glass, and the added notes of graham cracker and potpourri became noticeable. I called this 40yr port.

A treat shared by a friend. Initially the alcohol was pronounced but with a little air in the decanter the dark fruit and cigar box notes came out. Tannins are very soft and the wine is pretty evolved. I suppose like most quality port it will last but this is a good time to drink it. A treat.

Another great elegant aged vintage, a bit more solar profile, plummy, rich, burned cigar notes, spicy character - a nice wine

Everything is still in place here, although I think this vintage is definitely on its denouement. I haven’t rated for fear of skewing a perfectly good port with a lower score than it deserves. I just can’t handle port anymore.

Better 3 years ago when we had it last - but still wonderful. Now it’s slightly sweeter and less acid to keep it all together. But the fruit and depth is very much there. Haunting finish, still.

A truly stunning port. The cork was a struggle but the wine itself is in excellent shape. Beautiful clear ruby color. Deep aromas and an incredibly full palate with excellent dark stewed fruit and a ton of acid on the very long finish. Excellent!

Violets and licorice bouquet. Sassafras and Demerara, finishing with an authoritative rooty pucker. Who could ask for more?
