Great bottle! Drinking very old world-like in the best of ways. Plenty of life left.

Time to drink. Past its prime however still interesting. Blackberry, plumb with licorice. Some notes of leather along with what seemed stronger than normal alcohol. What you doing in 1987?

This one’s getting older. I have a few more and now it’s time to drink them. Very mature with tobacco to open it up. Also notes of cherry. Amazing it did not lose its vibrant red color. I’m sure this one’s better days have passed but still better than some made today.

Deeper , less garnet , narrower rim . Quite meaty , coffee and dark fruit , blackcurrant nose . On the palate more soy , coffee , cassis and black fruits , more fresh and vibrant than the G de L , higher quite raspy tannin too . Refreshing acidity , still quite young , needs time in decanter . Nice balanced finish , showing more fresh cassis and dark cherry . This could go further , and I feel there may well be better bottles out there that maybe more fruit driven .. 91?

Dark red fruit with leather and tobacco on the finish. Tannins have mellowed but the wine still is holding up well. Absolutely delicious.

It’s alive!!! This wine did not lose its color or flavor after all these years. Great structure! Decanted for more than 4 hours. Was worth the wait!

Absolutely stunning. Robert Mondavi was quoted as saying he felt the ‘87 Reserve was the best wine he ever made...and I can see why. The balance, flavor, mouthfeel...just everything about this wine screams elegance. I would still place the 1994 Harlan as the best cabernet-based wine that I’ve ever had...but this is a close second. This is the last of a baker’s dozen case of 1987 Mondavi that I bought when I started my academic career at UC-Berkeley. With my amazing wife just getting promoted to Full Professor...can’t imagine a better occasion to enjoy this last bottle.
