Mount Eden Vineyards Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
From the winery: In the late 1940s Martin Ray planted his first Cabernet vineyard with cuttings from the La Questa Vineyard. The present-day Estate Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in the early 1980s using cuttings taken from these vines. The climate is cool, especially for Cabernet, and influenced by the vineyard’s altitude and its proximity to San Francisco bay and the Pacific Ocean.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is going to need a number of years to come around. The only question is how many. In 2017, the Mount Eden Cabernet is shockingly opulent. Inky black fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, leather and incense are all dialed up in this super-sized Cabernet. Even so, there is plenty of structure lurking beneath. 2017 vintage. No smoke taint. Classically structured except on the back end/finish that lacks grip. Still very nice. Quality markers throughout that bump this up to where it is. Not their best vintage, yet super solid.
