‘Les Hauts Brins’ sits at the border with Volnay, at the top of a plateau facing south. Near the forest, this plot (neighboring premier cru vineyards) is cooler, with thin topsoil and hard limestone subsoils. There’s no mistaking this red Burgundy’s Volnay energy, with translucent rubied fruit and spice; yet the suave charms and sweet red fruit of Monthelie can’t resist taking center stage.
