Vouette et Sorbée Fidéle Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Champagne Pinot Noir 2011

Bertrand Gautherot began tending his familyand#39;s vineyards in the mid and#39;80and#39;s, originally selling all of his fruit to nandeacute;goandccedil;iants. It wasnand#39;t until his good friend and mentor, Anselme Selosse, recognized the superb quality of his grapes and convinced him to make his own wine that Vouette et Sorbandeacute;e was founded in 2001. Bertrand manages a tiny 5 hectares, certified biodynamic in 1998, and heads the local association of organic growers. Vouette et Sorbandeacute;e is located in the Candocirc;te des Bars in the Aube, at the southern tip of Champagne. Located in the tiny village of Buxiandegrave;res-sur-Arce, the vineyards (Vouette, Sorbandeacute;e, Biaunes) are actually much closer to Chablis than to andEacute;pernay. Bertrand himself likened the soil more to the famous Chablis vineyard andnbsp;and#39;Les Preusesand#39; than to the rest of Champagne, and the two share the same Kimmeridgian soil. The Champagnes are extremely singular, with a distinct vinous quality. He does meticulous work in his vineyard and adamantly selects individual bunches. The wines are fermented in older large barrels with native yeast, no filtration, no cold-stabilization and all with no dosage. Weand#39;ve not been shy of our admiration for Bertrandandnbsp;Gautherotand#39;sandnbsp;wines in the past, and this 2012andnbsp;Fideleandnbsp;(100% Pinot Noir)andnbsp;is clearly one of his great successes. Bertrandand#39;s tireless work in the vineyards over the years has led to wines that have continued to improve in strides since he first began bottling his own wines in 2001. These are thought provoking, layered, singular wines that are about so much more than just bubbles.

Not quite as funky as the 2009 (at this stage) and more austere. A bit herbal but it works. The 2011 vintage was tough but this is worth going back to.
