Ulli Stein has long been respected as one of the most dynamic winemakers in Germany, known for his irreverent fusion of the traditions of the Mosel with his own innate independent streak. This late harvest ( Spatlese ) bottling comes from one of Ulli's Grand cru sites in Palmberg with 90+ year-old vines ( Alte Reben ) planted on their own roots on a terraced slope ( Terrassen ) perched above the river. In 2019 he could have easily produced a riper Auslese or a wine with notable RS from this site given the warm weather but that would have been anathema to his preference for delicate and mineral expressions of Riesling. This wine flaunts a seamless combination of dry extract, ripe phenolics, and lithe focus that render it utterly compelling. Rich orchard fruit struck through with briney citrus leap out on the nose with just a hint of pineapple peaking around the corner. You would be able to describe the wine as weighty if the acidity wasn't so thoroughly refreshing on the palate, sporting a lengthy mineral finish. This wine is a must try for anyone who regularly enjoys great Sancerre or Chablis; Riesling has so much to offer!
