Roagna La Pira Barolo Nebbiolo 2012

$89.99

If you are not familiar with these wines, but are a fan of traditionally made wines fromandnbsp;Baroloandnbsp;andandnbsp;Barbaresco, you should waste no time in seeing everything you have been missing.andnbsp;These are substantial wines with plenty of density and depth that are built for the long haul. Theyandnbsp;carryandnbsp;all of their strength with an almost impossible grace. Lucaandnbsp;Roagna, who leads things at the estate today, is about as calm and composed a guy as you'll find anywhere in the business. Luca sees his role more as steward rather than any sort of radical innovator. It's true that he's pushed for improvements in his cellar and vines, but these improvements relate to fine-tuning a more clear expression of the familyand#39;s holdings rather than creating anything revolutionary. Luca has settled into his post quite seamlessly since he took over in 2001, and the wines are more compelling than they have ever been.andnbsp;

Stellar. One of my favorite wines in this week's article on new Barolo releases. Super classic, but will also drink well with minimal cellaring.

Maybe opened early but not by much. Decanted for a couple hours and broke in at the 1 hour mark. Paired well with chicken parm soup and had great tannic backbone but not a ton of fruit. Seemed to get smoother and more elegant as we finished over 4 hours.

This was still youthful & structured that benefited with air showing notes of rich dark fruits, dried herbs, spice, leather & tobacco.

Very nice Barolo. Complex fruit with good structure and some oak poking through but not in a new way at all. Delicious.

More dark ruby color than translucent brick. Dried flowers, touch of wood and smoke, cranberry, tea, wet fallen leaves on a misty forest floor. More acid and mineral, not as much tar and not as mellow and full as the 2013 Barolo we’ve had. From Flatiron Wines.
