Rivella Serafino Montestefano Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2014

$88.99

Occasionally a wine comes along that is so riveting, so engaging, and yet so subtle that it permanently imprints itself on your memory. It's rare enough to find one-off bottles that are this striking. It's almost impossible to find a single wine that delivers this experience each and every time you open it, regardless of the vintage. Serafino Rivella's Barbaresco from the Montestefano vineyard is all that and more. We've been working with Rivellaand#39;s Montestefano since the 2010 vintage, when we had the pleasure of tasting the current release alongside seven vintages dating back to 1971. The wines were magnificent, and we left wondering why Rivella was not in the same conversation as some of the true legends of the appellation. When we did some further digging, it became clear that the reason for the relative anonymity had much more to do with the miniscule size of the property (2.5 total hectares) than the indisputable quality of the wines themselves. It's since been our mission to track down as much Rivella as humanly possible. Teobaldo Rivella has been quietly farming the vines that his father planted in Montestefano since 1974. This vineyard sits just across from Montefico andamp; Ovello and is defined by a dense layer of limestone that sits just underneath the topsoil. The and#39;14 Montestefanoandnbsp;draws you in immediately with deeply nuanced and extremely expressive aromatics - dark fruits, subtle spice andamp; smoke. On the palate, this is exceptionally fine, graceful and extremely long. The wine is tightly knit as expected for such a young example, but there is such detail to the endless layers of flavor on display, and such impeccable poise to the wine overall that itand#39;s deeply satisfying already. A dream of a wine that will only gain in complexity and intrigue the longer you can resist it. andnbsp;

Last had nearly 4 years ago. Honestly it is not drinking that differently, which is to say it’s still very delicious and quite primary. Wonderful refined aromatics. Mouth filling and some real tannins that are present but not overbearing. Long refreshing acid driven finish. Opened 5 hours prior, no decant. Paired with salsa verde marinated skirt steaks.

Very nice but not singing at nearly the same level as the last bottle I had of this (about six months ago). Perhaps a bit closed, or just variation? Fairly brick red in the glass - classic nebbiolo. Beautiful red cherries and strawberry on the nose. Tannins are quite present and less integrated than I recall - but went well with a very nice fatty dry-aged prime ribeye from Fleishers. Nice lifting acid on the finish with a hint of menthol.

heard so much about producer but this seemed advanced and hard to drink. not sure if it was bottle issue.

Definitely one of the best barbarescos I’ve had of late. First time having stuff from them and was excited - did not disappoint. Perfect pairing with some roast lamb. Tons of cherry and earth. Fruit really comes through with a 1.5 hour decant. I’m sure this would be interesting in a few years but honestly one of the more accessible / enjoyable nebbiolos I’ve had recently. Excellent mouthfeel and length and acid - really delicious.
