R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2004

$46

Lopez is the finest producer of traditional, age-worthy Rioja. Their wines are legendary and still made the way they were when the winery was founded over 130 years ago. As is their tradition, the '04 Tondonia Reserva was released 10 years after the harvest.andnbsp;A rarity in Rioja, Lopez only bottles fruit from vineyards that they own and farm.andnbsp; The farming is organic and the winemaking is super old-school. Native yeast, spontaneous ferments and then elevage in old barrels for extended periods of time. This Reserva is made up of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo. It was aged 6 years in barrel and then 4 years in bottle before it was released. To be able to buy a wine of this quality and pedigreeandnbsp;for under $50 is just remarkable.

Lovely, supple flavour and a light body. Purple fruit and spice.

Aged Rioja is so crazy. Perfectly inline. Great place.

Always a good bet. This one was slightly more reticent than others I've had recently, as well as having more aged/secondary characteristics. Still an amazing wine for the price.

So consistently delivers. Needed decanting to show its true spirit, but after about an hour or so, it was singing.

Current vintage. 2004 sounds old but this tastes so young. So lively, bracing, and uncompromising. Racy, dynamic acidity makes the whole palate a bit inscrutable at first. I cannot overstate how much grip this wine has. Slowly, acid dissipates to reveal some true game and meat overtones. Petroleum, tannin, and tart fruit. Fabulous with Spanish cuisine. Although this was a lot for fun to try now, I'd recommend putting it in a dark part of your cellar for...Let's say 20 years.

A baby. Tightly wound. Needs either a several hour decant, or 5 more years laying down. Considering how these wines age, I'd aim for the latter. This vintage has a pretty deep core and I'd say has the makings for longevity.
