The Schonfels vineyard is approximately a mile away from Ayler Kupp, though the wine authorities have long grouped the two together; not until 2014 was Lauer allowed to list the different Lieu-dit on the label, after Florianand#39;s long-fought battle. Situated on a very steep slope of gray slate that faces south-east, overlooking the Saar, the vineyard is extreme in its placement, not protected by forest the way the most famous of the Saar vineyards are; resultingly, the grapes are able to be harvested later without the influence of botrytis, as the winds will dry the vineyards out more quickly.

Team drinks continued with this stunning Riesling from Peter Lauer. I remember reading in David Schildknecht's review of the 2015 that the vineyard from which this gorgeous wine emerges was abandoned and left wild. What a service from those who brought back these ancient vines into production. Wildly complex and almost viscous in texture, this rich, peachy, minerally wine is just gorgeous.
