The legendary Montevertine estate sits high up in the hills above Radda, in Chianti. The winery was founded in 1967 by Sergio Manetti. Manetti didn't agree with the requirements at the time that mandated the addition of Trebbiano to Chianti Classico, so he left the Chianti consortium, forgoing the appellation status, and never looked back. His wine is labeled as Rosso di Toscano, but this is not to be confused with other 'Super-Tuscans' that bear that same name, he is a staunch proponent of Sangiovese and doesn't add international varieties. This is primarily Sangiovese with tiny amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino. This cuvee comes from the younger (now 15 yo. old) east/north-east facing vines planted on albarese limestone. This exposition affords the grapes a long growing season and complete maturation. The fermentation is in cement vats (no stainless steel to be found here) with no added yeasts and no pumpovers. andnbsp;Elegance is this estate's hallmark, and this wine is no different. Lithe and supple, this exudes the graceful balance in Sangiovese we adore.

Really good and balanced. Drank over two days and showed dark sour cherry an hour or so after opened. More herbal and tea like the second day. At $25, this would be great to drink regularly.

1.5L bottle served side-by-side to Felsina’s “Fontalloro”. Decanted for two hours and returned to bottle an hour before serving. Sour cherries, black tea, dried herbs...a stunner with food. Obviously the more traditional of the two. A lovely IGT that stays true to the region’s roots. No pun intended.

Solid wine although didn’t quite land as much as other Montevertines I’ve had - there’s a lot going on but didn’t feel like it was all pulling in the same direction.

Got these as buffer for the Montevertine '16 resting in my cellar untill they're ready. Well, if this is a warning for what is coming...make sure you get these, the Montevertine and (if your wallet allows it) the Pergole Torte because something great is coming! As long as you stock them...
