Tonight's wine is a Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast. I picked this up a couple days ago and was excited to try it. I had heard a lot about Kutch wines over the last few months and wanted to know what all the hub bub was about. Jamie Kutch is the winemaker and his first vintage was a 2005 Pinot. Jamie used to be a stock trader from NYC on the NASDAQ working for Merrill Lynch. He traded in everything to move west bitten by the wine bug and to make Pinot Noir. He was mentored by Michael Browne of Kosta Browne fame and the rest is history. The nose on this Pinot is very expressive of good fruit with notes of plum, cherry, raspberry, ,menthol, clove and a musty earthy forest floor. The palate doesn't disappoint with a touch of sweetness, red cherry, black raspberry, plum, clove and a touch of oak. Even though this is a California Pinot it is not the normal big Pinot with dark fruit. This has an earthy soil texture with medium + mouth watering acidity and medium smooth fine tannins. A nice Pinot Noir and I can understand why there is a lot of talk about this winery.

Starting to settle down, but still rocking with acidity. Beautiful red fruit and earth, a whole cluster roundness and a great finish that dries out just a tad. Could use a few more years, but I enjoyed this after a couple hours air.

A good splash decant and this is ready to go. The perfect wine to drink during the years of waiting for the single vineyard versions to be ready.

It's still early for Jamie's 2013s, even for the Sonoma Coast. Perfumed, gorgeous red fruits, and solid acidity. 4hr decant really helps everything come together at this early stage.

Short list for wine of the summer. Amazingly complex, varietally correct and chock full of terroir. I don't think anyone who tried this didn't love it, all summer long. Not inexpensive but totally worth it.
