Jean Foillard Eponym' Les Charmes Morgon Gamay 2018

$48.99

Jean Foillard's bottles are not inexpensive in the context of Beaujolais, but they are immensely affordable in the context of top Burgundy, which is frankly how we should all be looking at them. They are a joy to drink in their youth in all their energy and freshness and are endlessly versatile at the table at all stages of their life.andnbsp; This is a fairly new cuvandeacute;eandnbsp;for Foillard, from 50 year old vines in the high-altitude site of Les Charmes. The stony soils coupled with the elevation here translates to a distinctly mineral and red fruited expression of Morgon.

Beautiful nose. Just so lifted and floral. Raspberry, black cherry, blueberry, pastille effect, herbal, an apothecary vibe in a medieval video game. Palate is lush and very 18. Soft and structured with black cherry and late season red cherries. Not showing much finesse yet but has great balance. Dynamite juiciness. Really engaging and fresh but still a little 18 itis. Ripe and juicy tannins with nice floral fruit notes. Let’s see where this goes. This stayed the same and lost some focus. 18 Foillards mostly miss the mark

This wine is outrageous. Extremely intense, must decant. Black currant and smoky leather.

My ride or die. Violets. Pastille/candied black currants and blueberries. If you really search for it, granite and ash on the finish. Riper vintage, but acid is sufficient and fruit is vibrant. Texture = silky and divine.

Crunchy bright, red fruit. Not the same depth as Foillard’s other Morgons, but everything’s in the right place. Just missing some of the Foillard magic. Maybe needs a little time.

Loved this. Prime example of a wine that keeps us coming back to Foillard. Fresh, red fruity. Nice body. Want all the bottles.
