Guilhem et Jean Hugues Goisot Bourgogne Aligoté 2017

$19.98

Burgundy produces the greatest, most nuanced Chardonnay on the planet. Of course the downside to acquiring world class white Burgundy is that they're usually accompanied by a steep price tag. If you're more of the pop-and-pour, value-driven type, Burgundy's other white grape, Aligote, is a lock to satisfy your sensibilities. What Aligote may lack in complexity, it more than makes up for in vivacity. Guilhem Goisot is already heralded as a superb producer of affordable white Burgundy, so his Aligote is a double whammy of value at $20. His north-facing vineyards had a frosty 2017, which required Guilhelm to cut production down to one-sixth of his typical yield. Despite miniscule amount available, Goisot 2017 Aligote is a killer bottle of wine. The nose is floral and stony, the palate pops with citrus and savory brightness, then hums along to a satisfying spicy, refreshing finish. A bottle would be a great addition to the Thanksgiving table, but beware, the wine isn't likely to last long, so better get two to be safe.

It’s very good, but nothing to write home about. My first taste of aligoté is, as expected, very much like unoaked chardonnay, with a slight lingering phenolic edginess. Almost a touch of that cocaine post-nasal drip bitterness at the end. I would not ask them to leave if they turned up uninvited.
