G.D. Vajra Kyè Langhe Freisa 2016

$44.99

G.D. Vajra is easily one of the most talented producers working with Freisa, an obscure grape variety that is directly related to Nebbiolo. There is always a family resemblance between the two grapes with Freisa displaying more wild, brambly flavors and carrying a bit more heft on the palate than Nebbiolo typically does. Given the quality of the vintage its no surpise thatandnbsp;the 2016 vintage of Kyandeacute; is a stunning bottle of wine. The nose is quite floral with brambly berry fruit, mint, and a touch of spice and it is rich and resonant on the palate with grippy structure it will benefit greatly from some age.andnbsp; Sourced from a parcel of vines planted by Aldo Vajra in 1980 at the base of the familyand#39;s holdings in the Bricco delle Viole vineyard.andnbsp; Certified organic farming, fermented in steel with a 3-4 week long maceration, aged in a mix of Botti and worn tonneaux for 26 months.andnbsp; This is about as good as Freisa gets!

Dense, youthful purple. This has plenty of life left and may have been opened too early. Aromas with air show a black cherry, bitter almond and cherry pit. The palate is equally tannic as nebbiolo but offers a fleshier texture, perhaps due to the anthocyanin content. Having been lucky enough to meet a scion of the winemaking family this week I understand that they expect that this wine will be able to age for at least a decade.

Light on its feet with perfumed dried flowers wafting out of the glass - fresh tart rhubarb and red berry compote. Stunning wine. Exotic spice keeps you coming back for more. Structured enough for just about anything you could put on the table.

This was great. Not the nobelist variety but this wine is structured and complex. Truly enjoyable. Medium tannin, moderate acidity. Not super aromatic, but really a nice wine by any measure and perhaps the most serious Freisa I've tried.

Dry, leather on the nose. Bouquet of light fruit.

Smells like Nebbiolo. Drinks with darker fruit and lower tannins.

Pop and pour. Very nice aromatics: plum, soft cocoa, violets....hi-toned. On the palate: good acidity, cocoa, a touch thin on the midpalate, but the grainy tannin kicks in quickly to give a sense of density. More mulberry, plum and soft wood as well. Not bad, but this btl deserves some age. Will wait a while longer for my next one...
