Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

$110

Poggio di Sotto is a remarkable estate in Montalcino that produces one of the finest Rosso di Montalcinos we have yet to discover.andnbsp; Located in the southern zone of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the property comprised of 3 parcels of Sangiovese covering 12 hectares. Piero Palmucci, the founder of Poggio di Sotto, made a point of only planting in plots well-suited to Sangiovese largely on south facing hillsides. Guilio Gambelli, the legendary enologist in Montalcino, consulted with Piero for many years and the estate still relies on his tried-and-true methods; Organic farming in the vineyards, native yeast fermentations in the winery, with elevage occurring only in large format Austrian oak. Notably, there is no distinction between the vineyards used to produce the Brunello and the Rosso at Poggio di Sotto with only slight differences in vinification to set the wines apart. The Rosso ferments in stainless steel and ages in Slavonian Botti for 2 years whereas the Brunello ferments in large oak and ages for 60 months in Botti. The 2016 Rosso from Poggio di Sotto is a wonderfully elegant expression of Sangiovese with pure red fruit, mint, cracked pepper, and just a touch of earth on the nose.andnbsp; The palate is quite open with fine, ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, and tightly coiled minerality on the finish; drinkable now, this is certain to vastly improve and unfurl over the next decade.andnbsp; Seekers of graceful, traditional Brunello should take note of this great estate.

Eh. The Brunello is where it’s at. But super pricey.

Notes from a few weeks back that I forgot to post. Licorice and raspberry. A bit tightly coiled, even after a decant.
